Can bed sheets thread count help us to keep cooler?
Struggling to sleep in the hot weather? Maybe changing your bed sheets could help? However haven’t we all visited a bedding store and been confused by the term “thread count”? In simple terms, if a fabric has a 200-thread count, there are 200 threads per one square inch of fabric, counting the threads horizontally and vertically. For a ‘crisp’ feel to your sheets try a 200-thread count Percale and during this warm weather choose a 400-thread count for a soft, lighter feel, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets.
When buying cotton bed sheets choose a thread count of at least 200 and also check where the cotton is grown and woven. The ‘best cotton’ is said to be grown in Egypt, with the Italians being known as the "master weavers of the world" due to their long tradition of weaving and their use of the best Egyptian cotton.
Having gone through the ‘checklist’ above, try to go with what feels best for you. For a durable linen bed sheet choose a thread count between 200 and 800. Percale, woven with a 200 thread count or higher, is more durable than a cotton satin of the same thread count and is less likely to pill than cotton satin because it has a denser weave.
Importantly, don’t let the numbers on cotton bed sheet packaging confuse or sway your choice, try to feel the bed sheets before buying, make sure you like the feel of the fabric against your skin and – sleep tight!
